would this be illegal? just curios
since you can buy a licence to windows without buying a disk, and since there is a pricedifference...
would it be illegal to give my dad a copy of my win-cd and having him buy a licence? i guess what i am asking is= is a copy of a windows cd in itself an illegal object? i don't think it is , but i (and mostly him) want to make absolutly sure. I'm not planning on doing annything illegal Last edited by corosus; 01-22-2004 at 07:19 AM. |

I believe that just the copying act - not for back up purposes - will push you over the line

from people's previous posts on this subject, i think all you need to have is the liscence. i remember people lost the disk and borrowed one from a friend and used a liscence they purchased from MS. i know that you can buy multi-liscence packs from newegg.

Doesn't sound like he is talking about copying the disk, but just using the disk with another purchased liscense for another PC, and yes I think that is legal and that is exactly what purchasing the liscense by itself is designed for. Just use the key from the liscense you purchase when you install on the other PC. It would be the same as if I want to load windows on another PC here in my home, no need to purchase the whole 100 dollar cd and all just need to get a second liscense for the second PC...

I might have miss read it but corosus asks
"i guess what i am asking is= is a copy of a windows cd in itself an illegal object? " On the CD it says 'Do not make illegal copies of this disk' and I beleive the only copy of the disk that is NOT illegal is a single back up copy for personal archival use. On the other hand if the question was can we buy another license and use the same cd for each install we have a license for? then the answer is sure. |

Nope. Burn as many as you want.
OEM system builders do this often, they give the end user a burned copy of the OS, and sell them the license. Totally legal, and supported by MS. Big box builders (HP, PB, Compaq, etc.) often don't even give you a burn copy, they simply load the whole CD onto the hard drive (usually in c:\windows\options\cabs) then sell you the license when you buy the computer. |
