There are other products like Print Shop Deluxe (Cheap) and Pagemaker, InDesign, Quark (Expensive) that can also create PDF files. Word can't.

as sure as I am sitting here,
word 2000 has the ability to convert to pdf format.

somewhere I read that word will save in pdf format, just can't find out how right now. maybe it is a newer version that can do it.

No! Word by itself (well no version of Word that is out there) will not create PDF documents.
You may use a 3rd party printer driver that will convert a Word document to PDF .
Quote from Microsoft KB Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2k2:
Quote:
Microsoft Word does not directly support conversion from Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). PDF is the format in which documents are saved for viewing and exchange in the Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Acrobat Exchange for Windows.

NOTE: Microsoft does not provide a text converter to convert Word document files to Acrobat (PDF) format. For more information about how to convert Word document files to Adobe Acrobat, please contact Adobe Systems Incorporated.
Check out PDFzone - http://www.pdfzone.com/ for a variety of toolkits for creating PDFs; they range in cost and features.

Don't forget WordPerfect! Since either version 7 or at the latest, version 8 had the ability to print to PDF files.

for god's sake don't learn latex!

windows ghostscript has a ps2pdf batch file like most unix terminals. you can print most anything in postscript (not just word) and convert it to pdf.

postscript is better than pdf in the sense that linux is better but no one uses it.

edit: it's free

PDFproducer v1.3
----------------

PDFproducer is a nice little utility which converts plain text into PDF documents. The benefit of this program is that it does not require Acrobat to be installed on the system. It means that it does not uses any component of acrobat to produce PDF files. As it is freeware you don't have to pay anything(but thanks) for producing PDF documents. Produce PDF files without having Acrobat. You can now change the page size also. It offers 90, 180, 260 and 360 degrees of rotation. It also offers a choice of 3 fonts which you can use in your PDF documents. Not to mention 3 types of predefined paper sizes. These all features make PDFproducer a nice little tool for quick PDF production. Have fun creating PDF files!!! Note: This program requires VB6 runtime files installed on the system.

Actually you can create a PDF from within Word. Word itself does not do it, you need Adobe Distiller installed and then you can convert a file to PDF from within different applications.
