Boom Word XP Problem with figures

Help Please, I'm writing my essay for almost two months now, and two days before i hand it in, i lost all my figures from inside the word document.

I'm using Windows ME, OfficeXP, I had this document for months now, and just now, 55 out of the 56 figures i had embedded in the document disappeared and all i get is a big red "X" inside a black border instead, all except the first one. GOD knows why, and why now!!

The file size haven't noticably changed, so i know the figures are there some where in the file but can't be read.

The files are all jpg, and insterted using the regular way in word of inserting files nothing fance, they are much larger high resolution and word automatically resized them to fit in the page. I used a macro that i made to automate centralizing the figure and adding a text caption and removing the black border and everything worked fine until i was making my final modifications in the document which was actually modificatons in the table of contents which happens to be the first page and doesn't have any figures, not even in the same section.

Can anybody how to get back my figures and why that happened in the fisrt place??

Are the graphics actually inserted in the document, or are they dynamically linked? If they are linked, it sounds like the path to them has changed.

They are inserted, and the path chnaged many times during writing the essay, this happened after not changing the path for a week or so.
Not really sure if inserted or linked, but i guess clicking on the "Add Picture" button from the picture toolbar inserts pictures and doesnt' link them, doesn't it??
