xp updates

Here we go again...

After downloading some XP 'critical updates' many many moons ago it screwed up my cleanish trouble free system so much I swore never to update anything until the service packs come out.

So I have had over a year of 'clean' xp pro running, it has been fun.

Like the twit that I am yesterday, for some strange reason, i updated my system.

Now my Sony CDRW won't autoplay or even play anything, the system 'see's the data but keeps asking me to put a disk in...

Same with my built in CF card reader, it.. supposedly needs to be formatted...

A can anyone tell me why Microsoft do this...?

b more importantly can anyone help...?

I have tried uninsalling/re installing/updating drivers for the CDRW, the Card reader and both IDE primary and secondary controllers. I've even unplugged the devices, re plugged them in, booted and let XP find them.

Still nowt.

AMD 2500+ @ 1800
1gbRAM
nvidia fx5600
Asus A78X-X
Sony CRX225 CDRW
Generic 6-1 card reader internal (old A drive slot)
XP pro SP-1

Norton Av 2003 switched off

Thought as much, luckily all my files are on a separate disk, so it's not too time consuming.

i might even go over to win 2003, a lot of stuff is switched off I know but with great forums like these it might be better for me.

I run Photoshop, office, nero, IE6 and about 1 game so speed is my thing really and 2003 could be the answer...

thanks for your help.

I've gotten every critical update for XP that's come out (none of the "optional" ones and never the driver updates) and not had a problem. However, I've helped several customers who had major problems with updates when they forgot (or didn't know to) disable their anti-virus program during the process. All but one were running Norton, the other was running McAfee. Could that be the problem?

I agree, Miz. I've made it a point to always shut down the AV when installing new software. However, I've never had a problem running updates and installing with the AV running. Doesn't mean it can't happen, just hasn't happened to me. Must be some combination of hardware/software that causes this to happen.

stevebri, have you tried doing a restore to a point before the update? Don't know if it will work, but might be worth a try rather than reinstalling or doing a repair over the top.

Why don't you downgrade to Win 2000 Pro? It's matured into a rock solid OS. All you really lose is fancy wizards and system restore.

I think it's the Norton AV reading what you guys have said...

I'll try the updates again (as i took them out) without AV..

Thanks people.

My XP has been spot on for over a year now, so I was suprised when this happened, however I DID have AV running so that could be (hopefully the problem)
