I've used Bosskey about 2 yrs. ago on the PC labs at my college so I can easily hide Starcraft and AIM. I am not sure if it's the same program but I found this:

I am unsure about the software's side-effects. It was working fine when I have it installed in the systems in the PC lab. But use at your own risk!

If you're using Windows XP, you can do it for free. Just right click on the taskbar > Properties > Hide Inactive Icons > Customize.

You can hide the icons you want. Just go down the list. I keep a few open. The rest I hide.

If you want everything gone from the right-hand end of the task bar, which is called the System Tray, it's not possible. Systray is pretty much a required part of the operating system.

If it's a particular icon you want to remove, how that's done depends on the icon. The volume control icon, for example, is done through the Control Panel. Program icons are usually eliminated through the program itself, usually by disabling its program from loading on startup. Some icons can only be removed by unchecking their program's entry in msconfig's startup list.

For free, the best you are going to do is get the arrows. I don't know that any payware will completely remove the system tray.
