burning I-tunes is allowed, you can only burn a certain playlist so many times though. If you want it as a MP3 you need to burn it to a CD then rip it as one.

Do a search in the I-tunes help file for" burning" should be some help there for you.

You can burn an itunes song as many times as you like (you have to create a playlist of the songs you want to burn, you can burn each playlist 10 times, after that you can delete the playlist, recreate it and burn it 10 more times, perfectly legal),
itunes installs (or should) it's own burning software. Try updating to the newest version of itunes and see if that fixes the problem. If you are using windows 2k, go to the itunes help and support page and look for fixes. I know there were problems with itunes and 2k when it first got released but have supposedly been fixed. Also, and i hate to say it, your drive may not be supported.
