Is Office 97 doing what you need it to do? If so, why bother with upgrading.

Gary, it depends on your specific needs.
XP has more format options, has the smart-tags, and other goodies like language tools. To me, the smart-tags and having all the languages in one package was enough for the upgrade. But then again, I really use those features as I do lot of writing in Spanish and English. If you share a lot of files with other people and those files have lots of formatting you may want to upgrade, as some format characteristics (like tables) degrade or lose completely if you open a document created in Word XP with Word 97.

thanks nuc-Icant seem to be able to find my 97 disk anyway so I guess it will be xp,but when I started to load it I get this screen that says: Microsoft office xp requires newer windows system components not detected on your computer
To instal office, setup must update your system to the minimum required level of funtionality, including: Core systemand access components What does this mean, will it do anthing to the operating system??? GaryD |

My impression is that it will install extra components for the apps to run. Yes, it will modify the OS but I don't think it will break it.
Although I have never encountered that problem myself, I have seen similar situations where a program needs to install or update OS files and/or components needed but not present. This happened to me with the Windows Installer in a W98 machine when I installed a burner. Heh, that time I had to download and install manually the WI update myself. But after that all worked fine. |

I'm still running o97 - the only real reason to upgrade would be for the improvements in Outhouse if you use it. All other file formats are transportable across versions except Access.

Outhouse XP is worlds better than Express - it's a full information manager, not just e-mail. It has a full contact list, calendar, to-do lists, reminders, etc. and all you have to back up is a single file that contains everything (outlook.pst).
