A+: Where are my registry files?

I guess I can get right to the point. I can't seem to find my registry files in XP. And in 98SE they seem to be in the %\Windows directory, is that right? Where are the registry files for 9x machines and NT-based machines supposed to be?

DragonNOA1,

The registry files for XP are located in:

C:\Windows\system32\config (assuming that XP is installed to the C:\Windows folder)

or

%SystemRoot%\system32\config (if XP is not installed to the C:\Windows folder)

For 9x systems the registry is stored in the USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT files in the Windows directory.

In NT and 2000, the registry is located as in XP above.

HTH,

OK, found them for 98. But XP must save the user.dat as NTUSER.dat in your "documents and settings folder" and system.dat in your system32\config folder. NT goes in "windows\profiles" folder, I believe. I think that's right, is it? Thanks everyone.
