Kernel - what about?
Hello,
The kernel is a vital part of a computer's Operating System. What exactly is the Kernel? Software or hardware? What does it do? On my computer's Task Manager (i use MS Windows XP Pro) there is some information there : Kernel Memory (K) Total (numbers are changing) Paged (numbers are changing) Nonpaged (numbers are changing) What is the Kernel Memory and these : Total, Paged, Nonpaged ? Thank you, Star-Com. |

I'm not sure on the rest, I'm waiting for the answer myself. But what I do know is that it is definately software.

The kernel is the bottom-most software layer in the operating system and has direct access to the hardware and manages system resources (memory, paging, etc.). All other operating system components rely on the kernel for these basic functions.

I think a kernel was developed so that programs had to access it instead of the hardware directly, helping to make programming easier. Try Here.
