Application Error

When my computer boots up, it comes up fine with windows xp and everything loads, my firewall starts but then I get an error that says:

Application

"Application has performed an error and needs to close"
I have the usual "send report" or "don't send" buttons but try for the life of me I can't figure out what "applicaton" is. I close the box and everything runs fine. Anyone run across this?

Have you tried checking for spyware and viruses? You can check your event viewer to see if it says what application has failed. Or just check your msconfig and see what is supposed to load and check it to what is actually running. Good Luck!

I have checked for both spyware using both Ad-Aware and Spybot as well as did a virus scan using McAfee and nothing. Everytime windows boots I get this message. I checked the event viewer and it says

Application error (and when I check the properties it says)
"Faulting application updmgr.exe version 1.5.1.0, faulting module mfc42.dll, version 6.0.8665.0, fault address 0x00001351"

I wonder if something got messed up in the msconfig. I'll have to go through that as welll. If you have anymore suggestions I would greatly appreciate them. Thanks in advance!

First, goto Housecall to do an online scan. If no viruses, run "sfc" from the command line and be prepared to insert your XP CD. If problems still occur, you can check out msconfig and stop the file from loading (it may be in your "start up" folder under start menu>programs). Some program is trying to load its update manager, but it is failing. If you update all your programs regularly, then disabling it should be ok.
