MS Exchange 5.5 question?
Does anyone know the proper order to shutdown Exchange 5.5 services on a Windows NT server?
I know the start (services) order, but what is the stop (services) order? In advance thanks for the response! |

Zilantyas,
Here is the order in which you should stop services on an Exchange 5.5 server: microsoft exchange internet mail service microsoft exchange message transfer agent microsoft exchange event service microsoft exchange information store microsoft exchange directory microsoft exchange system attendant Should be just the reverse for your startup procedure... Thanks a million! I've accomplished what needed to be done.
Basically, I needed to write a script that would stop the service at a schedule after-hour time to do an Exchange backup and then script it to restart the services. My problem was when the script ran to shutdown the service it would prompt with a warning message to end the service because the script was not in proper order...it was shutting down services first that other services were depending on! Like I had the System Attendant shutting down first...which the rest depended upon. Therefore, this resulted in a message prompt which no one was there to execute. I put the correct order in and now all is fine. Thanks to you. Thanks LiVeWiRe! |

I assume that you are shutting down Exchange so that you can backup the .edb and log files. If so, depending on which backup program that you are using, you can get an agent which will backup Exchange without having to shut it down. I have Veritas Backup Exec 8.6 with the Exchange Agent that does a good job. You can even backup individual mailboxes if you want.
