If you use the WINE program you should be able to run most programs. Also, Linux have surprisingly good free software such as word processors and instant messangers, as you've mentioned.

Unfreez (http://www.whitsoftdev.com/unfreez/). It's a great .GIF animator, just make some still .GIFs (with another program), and drag and drop them into the unfreez window, and it turns all of your images into an animated .gif. I'm making my avatar for this and other forums with it (im not done, though), its real easy.

This application is a musthave, it is called Trayit! and allows you to move an application to the tray by right clicking the "X" button. It allows me to keep Thunderbird open 24/7 without having it use up precious Taskbar space http://www.teamcti.com/trayit/trayit.htm

Also I reccomend WordWeb. Highlight any word in any application and click on the tray icon to see what it means and similar words. In applications where you can edit text you can replace the word with the correct spelling if you found it was spelled wrong. A must have!

I love freeware and have found a lot of it in the past few years. There are so many awesome apps out there!

I just looked through the post and didn't see IE-spyad mentioned. Believe it or not it's better than spyware blaster for people that use IE, IMO.

Hostess is a little program to manage your host file. You can import multiple host files into its database and its going to sort the entries into categories and remove duplicate entries, then when you want you can export it to your real hostfile. Its great when you use host files from different places to block out bad stuff.

Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer
Quote:
In response to direct customer need for a streamlined method of identifying common security misconfigurations, Microsoft has developed the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA). Version 2.0 of MBSA includes a graphical and command line interface that can perform local or remote scans of Windows systems. MBSA runs on Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000, and Windows XP systems and will scan for common security misconfigurations in the following products: Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Internet Information Server (IIS) 5.0, and 6.0, SQL Server 7.0 and 2000, Internet Explorer (IE) 5.01 and later, and Office 2000, 2002 and 2003. MBSA also scans for missing security updates, update rollups and service packs published to Microsoft Update.

Picasa2

Picasa I have found to great for finding pics and organizing them. Ever lost a photo buried somewhere on your hard drive? Picasa will find it. It's free as well.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 on a disk

Microsoft will send you a cd with Xp SP2. Helpful if you are on a slow internet connection, since it is 270 Gb. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx

I have found a new tool that helps people quickly review many websites. In addition it helps prevent you from going to sites with spyware, adware, viruses, or even just poor content. The tool is the ReviewToolbar which allows users to rate sites, so that legitimate sites with good content are easily distinguishable from malicious or poorly designed sites. The program embeds site ratings directly in the search results of the web's most popular search engines. The best thing is that like all good tools, it is free. It is available for free at http://www.reviewtoolbar.com

For a Zip utility, Justzipit is available at http://free-backup-software.net/

It's very user-friendly and has a good compression ratio. Recommended.
