I didn't notice if this was on there or not, but I love WavePad for editing audio files and you can also convert from one type of file to another (i.e. mp3 to wav).

Also, there is a program called OpD2d that lets you record directly from your soundcard. You can record streaming audio in this way. It's not CD quality but it's a nice way to save something that you can't get any other way. It has its own file format but I use WavePad to convert it to a .wav file.

Here are a few more -

Text Editors to replace MS Notepad and its 64K memory limit:
** NoteTab Light - http://www.notetab.com/
Multifunction text editor, HTML editor, etc.
** EditPad Lite - http://www.editpadpro.com/editpadlite.html
A more basic and minimalistic editor than NoteTab. It still has quite a few features.

Download Managers:
** WackGet - http://www.millweed.com/
A nice small DL Mgr. based on wget. Pause, Resume, Queue, etc. You can add downloads from Firefox using the DownloadWith extension. WackGet is open-source. Minimalistic. No install needed if you choose the .zip.
** LeechGet - http://www.leechget.net/
A full featured DL Mgr. Integrates with Firefox using the FlashGot extension.

MD5Sum Utes:
** Nero MD5 Verifier - http://www.nero.com/nero6/en/Nero_MD5_Verifier.html
Basically the open source MD5Sum listed below with a nice GUI frontend by Ahead. Easy to use. Fast. Check or generate single file MD5Sums. No install needed.
** md5sum.exe - http://theopencd.sunsite.dk/md5.php
The DOS version. What I used before I stumbled upon the Nero MD5 Verifier. Run from command prompt.

Archive Utility:
** FilZip - http://www.filzip.com/
An alternative to 7-Zip. Handles most formats.

Registry Backup Utility for NTFS:
** ERunt - http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/
Quickly backs up the XP registry for quick restores.

E-mail Client:
** Popcorn - http://www.tucows.com/preview/333653
Popcorn is a small minimalistic POP Email client. Fits on a floppy and will run from the floppy. You can carry your POP email account access with you and use it on any computer connected to the internet without setting up anything on the host computer. No install needed.

Astronomy Related:
** Planetarium Program - http://www.winstars.net/english/
Winstars - the free version includes the Sky2000 catalogue. A lot of features for free.
** Sundial Design - http://perso.orange.fr/blateyron/sun...shadowspro/gb/
Shadows lets you design many different types of sundials. Make one out of cardboard for the kids, or build one from concrete/tile/brass for your backyard. Draws the dial for printing or gives the pertinent coordinates for all the lines needed so you can go as large as you like.

Misc.:
** CAD - http://www.cadstd.com/
CadStd Lite is a useful home CAD prog. Small and easy to use. Select the free version.
** Time Sync - http://tf.nist.gov/service/its.htm
Nistime will adjust your clock to sync with the NIST Atomic time. Freeware from NIST and the US Gov. Turn off the Windows Internet Time sync and use this manually when you need adjustment. Can also poll the servers on a schedule for those with networks that need time sync. No install needed.

We must have an updated list blue-gun.....

Someone prior mentioned Avast Antivirus by Alwil software.

This program is a totally free stand alone program.
No sidebar advertisements
No pop up adds...ever
No spyware
No adware

Virus Definitions are updated every 3 hours not once a day as in Nortn.

And its easy to sign up

Submit your valid e-mail to avast to receive your free product activation code.
Your PA code is good for one year, at which time you must reregister with Avast to
receive your next year, and so on...

I have Avast on 7 computers in my house and it hasn't failed me yet.
My Opinion--- The most useful program on the net.

Winzip and Winrar both have 40(?) day trials.

You can unzip and unrar(?) things with those after the trial period, but not zip or rar(?) anything.

I think...

Wow, lots of (?)'s on that.

That still does not qualify them as "free" software.
