Question Editing in MS Word and Paperport!

I'm using Win98SE & PaperPort 6.0 and I'm attempting to update some text files by scanning to PaperPort. It looks like it is easier to copy/paste file to Wordpad and then edit files. I'm able to paste files in Wordpad without any problem. But, Once I have them in WordPad I can't edit or do anything with them. Can't even get cursor to show on page so that I can delete/edit etc. These files from PaperPort are .max file exts. I have also attempted to edit files while still in PaperPort but this is very confusing to me(which doesn't take much). If I scan direct to Wordpad or Word Perfect, The text is all unreadable and won't work that way either. I've spent more time than I care to mention reading Help Index from Paperport & Wordpad and I just get more confused. Certainly would appreciate and advice, comments, etc. Thank You
