MSN Messenger Annoyance

I'm hoping some one might be familiar enough with MSN Messenger to recognize this condition.
I'm running Win XP Pro. I have MSN Messenger (version 6.1) and Messenger Plus (version 2.54.0.74) installed. I do not have Windows Messenger installed.

The problem is just a small annoyance - one I've been trying to solve for a while: I usually like to leave MSN Messenger running. After being away from the keyboard for about 15 minutes, Messenger goes into the process of signing me out. I don't get signed out as long as I'm active at the keyboard. It's not the screen saver or my power options, as they're both set for much longer periods than 15 mins before they activate. I use zone alarm, but both MSN Messenger and MSN Plus are granted full access to the internet (including server options). Also, I've tried disabling Zone Alarm entirely, and the problem persists.

Also, when I return to the computer to find the program signing me out, it never finishes the sign-out. I can click "sign out", but it doesn't speed anything along....it just continues to say "signing out". I can exit the program, but when I attempt to restart the program, the contact window comes back up and the message "signing out" often still remains.

Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Moth,

I haven't used MSN Messenger but I know with Yahoo Messenger there is a setting under Preferences that will sign you out or leave you idle within a specified period of time. Perhaps there is a similar setting in Messenger?

HTH,

Well, MSN Messenger can be set to have your status set to "away" after a given period - for the benefit of your contacts, and it can be set to automatically log on when you start your pc, but they're isn't any auto log-off option that I'm aware of.

I use Messenger 6.1 and it is open all the time on XP Home and I have never seen anything like what you describe. I don't see anything in the preferences either. I don't know what could be causing it.

Yeah, it baffles me too. The pc and all of it's software seems to be in perfect working order otherwise. No viruses, adaware run every day, registry cleaned every week, harddisk defraged. I don't know what causes it.

Yeah, I uninstalled and reinstalled both the Messenger and the Plus a couple of times. They used to work fine together until I got newer versions that came out....I'm guessin' about 6 months or so back. Pity, but I don't have the old versions anymore...maybe they added a problem - I'm kinda left guessing.

The latest version of messenger is much less than 6 months old. Try downloading the newest version.
