Help with removing linux & Installing Windows
I'm getting a used laptop for wordprocessing purposes. It's a Dell latitude P2 400mhz, 128mb, 6gb hd running Linux mandrake 9.2. I want to install Windows98se on it. How do i go about doing this? Thanks to all who reply.

just pop your disk in the cd-rom drive, and set your bios to boot from cd. you will be off and running

I've been led to believe it would be a pain in the a$$. I'm very relieved knowing it will be that simple.

no, it is really simple. the disk will go in, and it will have you delete the linux partition and create a new one for windows, and it will format and install to that partition. then, it will be to the setup (in a GUI). it is really simple, but as always, you have people here to help, so just post back if you run into issues

Ya, the pain that you might be thinking of would be dual booting Linux and Windows, although that really isn't that hard, but its the closest I can guess.
As Hobey said just stick in the disk, format the partition, and then install

Another question......would you advise I stick with win98se for this laptop? Do you think it would be able to handle XP or win2000?

Not XP. Thats many Gigs gone, and at LEAST 256 RAM is needed for it to be worth running, not to mention the low MHz. Maybe 2k... never used it(only XP) so I am not sure of how well it performs. Just saying the no no for XP from experience(Friends HP... 128 RAM, 1GHz, Integrated Vid, it was a snail)

i think that you would be best with 98. while you could prolly get 2000 on there, i don't think you would enjoy it as much

Win2K will run acceptably on that machine, and be worlds more stable than 98. I install 2K all the time on 300 MHz machines with 128 ram. It's too weak to run XP well, and the hard drive is too small to install more than a few apps.
Boot with the 2K CD, and delete all partitions, then set 2K up on the unpartitioned space (which should be the whole hard drive). 2K should have native drivers for every component in it. hobey - 98 is not like 2K and XP - you can't just pop the CD in and expect it to take care of the partitioning and formatting for you. You have to manually run FDISK, and it may have problems getting rid of the non-dos partitions. Last edited by glc; 03-31-2004 at 03:17 PM. |
