Word and Excel problems

I've spent HOURS trying to fix this problem, to no avail: if anyone could help i'd be extremely appreciative: the problem: if I open up Word or Excel and then open a file, no problem. If I try to open the file before opening the application, i encounter a 15 second delay, give or take.

I just upgrade to Office 2003, but was experiencing the same problem under Office XP. I tried removing Norton Antivirus CE 7.6, but that didn't fix the problem. Drive doesn''t need to be defragged, and all hotfixes etc are up-to-date.

That's pretty normal. When you click on a .doc or .xls file, the application then has to open up to view the file.

What's your RAM, and CPU? 15 sec is a bit long but then again I run a P4 3.12 with 1GB RAM.

15 sec is about the time I have to wait at work. I use a P3 Gateway.

i have a 1.6Ghz Pentium M, 512 megs ram, and a 40gb hard drive. it's kind of weird; it's not running unbearably slow, but I know it's running differently from how it used to.

Hmmmmmm........ it shouldn't be that slow IMO.
Perhaps you have too much stuff running simultaneously, check for spyware etc.
