A Motherboard Monitor can probe several things.
For example an ASUS motherboard has this ASUS PC Probe that can measure the CPU Temperature, the MB Temperature, the CPU Fan rotation, voltages etc. Very handy stuff to use.

My laptop used to shut down if it over heated ,Until I figured how to use it with out it doing that
In other words your laptop might have the same feature so it won't burn up plus if you set you power properties (POWER OPTIONS in the control panel) to max battery your CPU should run at half the speed I know slowing it down might seen dumb but if your just using the internet it really won't matter and it won't heat up much and of coarse your battery will last longer
