Partition magic: split?
I just created a new partition named D: drive 40 gb and I have a primary drive C: drive 80 gb
Is that all I need. My friend said I have to use the split function? Must I? Thanks |

What do you have right now (number of HDDs and size of each HDD) and what are you trying to do?

My current drive is C:, and I created a new partition, it was named D: C: is primary and D: is logical. Is that all I need to do? D: is ready to be used and function properly? |

No, don't format C, have you formatted D? If so, it's ready to put whatever you want on it.

When you format a drive Windows installs a small set of files that allows it to see the drive and utilize the space. So yes format the D partition.

Thanks. Now, what exactly does the "split" function do? |

That's for breaking one existing partition into two. I've never used it, I usually just shrink partitions to create empty space, then create new partitions in the empty space.
Note - Partition Magic supports batch processing - where you can make several changes before rebooting to apply the changes - but I *always* make one change at a time. It takes longer, but the way I see it, it's a LOT safer if something goes wrong - which does happen more often than they would like to tell you. |
