Partition magic: split?

I just created a new partition named D: drive 40 gb and I have a primary drive C: drive 80 gb

Is that all I need. My friend said I have to use the split function?

Must I? Thanks

What do you have right now (number of HDDs and size of each HDD) and what are you trying to do?

Opps, i guess my question wasn't clear.

My current drive is C:, and I created a new partition, it was named D:

C: is primary and D: is logical.

Is that all I need to do? D: is ready to be used and function properly?

No, don't format C, have you formatted D? If so, it's ready to put whatever you want on it.

Even with nothing on it, I still format it?

When you format a drive Windows installs a small set of files that allows it to see the drive and utilize the space. So yes format the D partition.

Strange, i can use it and see it without having to format. I restarted the PC, partition magic most likely did the work.

Thanks.

Now, what exactly does the "split" function do?

That's for breaking one existing partition into two. I've never used it, I usually just shrink partitions to create empty space, then create new partitions in the empty space.

Note - Partition Magic supports batch processing - where you can make several changes before rebooting to apply the changes - but I *always* make one change at a time. It takes longer, but the way I see it, it's a LOT safer if something goes wrong - which does happen more often than they would like to tell you.
