Invalid ActiveX/COM Entries, Norton WinDoctor repairs

A kind of problem that Norton WinDoctor repairs quite often is :

''Invalid ActiveX/COM Entries.''

''The ActiveX/COM sections of your Windows Registry contain one or more invalid entries.
This can cause documents to open improperly, applications not to run, or your computer to crash.''

Q1. What is the ActiveX/COM sections of the Windows Registry?

Q2. What are these ''invalid entries'' and how are they created?
