make a copy of a DVD for personal use

I guess anyone with kids would like to know the answer to this..........

Is there a program to make a backup of a DVD on a CD-R or RW so that the kids can watch the backup without destroying the original DVD? Just hate to buy a DVD and then after a week the original be all scratched up to where it can't be watched ever again. Strictly for personal backup only.

there is no way that a dvd will fit on a cd.
you must have a dvd burner and the proper software to do that

What you can do is to convert the movie to DivX, SVCD, VCD, etc., and play it that way. But you have to make sure that your DVD Player can handle these formats.

Check out Doom9 for software and instructions on the ripping and converting processes.

Yup.... a DVD has multiple storage layers that a CD doesn't, therefore it can store a lot more. Ripping it is the safest option, and then you can get them to watch it off your hard-drive without worrying about media at all =)
