Exclamation backup Outlook from dos

hello

my computer got hit by a major virus and allot of the windows files were deleted I am able to boot to dos but not windows, not even safe mode I have made the choice to buy a larger HDD (good NEWS) but I want to backup my outlook emails to put on my new HDD (bad NEWS) But I am unable to locate the email folders I understand it is in a .dbx file format but I cant remember how or if you can search in dos for file formats. I am running Windows me and the outlook 5 or 6 not sure I have looked in the C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\ but there is no outlook directory just a INTRO file

from root of the drive "dir inbox.*" will find the directory.

They are buried about 6 or 7 levels down wherever it is. Dang, short term memory is gone. Did it today and can't remember it. And getting to it in DOS may be a problem because one of the directories shows <123... for example but the real name is {123... Did it Friday from DOS and turned around and did it again today from W95B.

First of all, welcome to PC Mech!

Outlook Express files are stored in the same path but instead of 'Outlook' you should see a folder named 'Identities' or 'ID'.

The DBX files will be under a folder with a string of numbers and letters (GUID) then under 'Microsoft' and then under 'Outlook Express'.

You should be able to use the 'dir' (directory) command to list the contents/files on the drive.
