hello
my computer got hit by a major virus and allot of the windows files were deleted I am able to boot to dos but not windows, not even safe mode I have made the choice to buy a larger HDD (good NEWS) but I want to backup my outlook emails to put on my new HDD (bad NEWS) But I am unable to locate the email folders I understand it is in a .dbx file format but I cant remember how or if you can search in dos for file formats. I am running Windows me and the outlook 5 or 6 not sure I have looked in the C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\ but there is no outlook directory just a INTRO file |

from root of the drive "dir inbox.*" will find the directory.
They are buried about 6 or 7 levels down wherever it is. Dang, short term memory is gone. Did it today and can't remember it. And getting to it in DOS may be a problem because one of the directories shows <123... for example but the real name is {123... Did it Friday from DOS and turned around and did it again today from W95B. |

scheetz83,
First of all, welcome to PC Mech! ![]() Outlook Express files are stored in the same path but instead of 'Outlook' you should see a folder named 'Identities' or 'ID'. The DBX files will be under a folder with a string of numbers and letters (GUID) then under 'Microsoft' and then under 'Outlook Express'. You should be able to use the 'dir' (directory) command to list the contents/files on the drive. HTH, -LW |
