That's the main AV recommendation you'll get from this forum
![]() Another good AV apparently is NOD-32, though I think after the trial period it costs money |

err, two things, do those work on networks cause i know there was one i saw on the screensavers that didn't...
and umm... do those block popups? for some reason im getting popups on my desktop. not in internet explorer. when i ran ad aware and spybot i pulled up 1400+ spyware programs... the weird thing is i had just run it the day before... |

how do the pop ups look? Grey boxes with text? If so you sound like you need to disable the messenger service, this is a feature to allow admins to tell people on the LAN that there are system outages, but pop up perveyors discovered they can send in these alerts as adverts.
I am assuming win xp here - go to Administrative Tools from the All Programs in Start - then select Services and scroll down to Messenger. double click on it and make sure the startup type is disabled. SP2 will set this to OFF by default when ever it comes out. NOTE - this is complety different from the IM messenger service in case you use that. Here is a good list of what can be turned off http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

No it doesn't block popups, For that I use the free popup blocker from www.panicware.com. You are crusing some questionable sites if you are getting that much malware. You definately need antivirus and make sure that it is kept updated. Chas |

Back to the main topic, avast is good www.avast.com although it does have some stability issues. I like it better than AVG.

I downloaded MS-DOS NOD32, but I didn't know how to use it from a floppy disk, and I will try avast later, for there is a forum I can get some help.

I was using Norton and switched to the free version of Avast anti-virus about a month ago and hasn't had a problem since. Now I don't have this bloated Norton program on y computer.
To stop pop-ups I either use Firefox or I use the free pop-up blocker for IE that came with my DSL account. |

AVG will install on anything Win95 or newer and run, it's just against their licensing terms to run it on a network. Yes, it will install on NT Server.
