Reformat the system
hi I have been using my system on and off for some time now. i recently opened the system after 6 months and hooked it up. and it was working fine till yesterday. yesterday, i got a error message saying "some files are modified with un known versions. I tried to fix this with windows 2000 pro CD. but it was asking for an other FIX CD from Microsoft.
Then I started upgrading it to XP pro. while doing this, it prompted me for a couple of missing files but continued with the installation. now the whole installation is finished. but i am getting an error saying something like "check the hard drives for the virus CHDSK /F ..." Is there any way, i can re format my system start fresh. I want to do this because, there were some problems with my CD writer. I tried to go to command prompt, but it is bringing me to the same blue screen with the error every time. Thanks for the help in advance ultra

Put the XP Pro in the CD drive and reboot. Do a new installation (not a repair). Partition and format however you want. You will start over with a completely new OS.

XP installation is completed now, but in between it prompted me for some missing files, but continued.
When I tried to start the system with XP CD in it, it was giving me 4 options. 1.safe mode 2.Safe mode with command prompt 3.last worked settings 4.normal mode I tried all the 4 options, but no change except the Blue Screen with the same jargon. I tried to get into the command prompt sothat I can format. But even the option 2 is not taking me to the command prompt. Is there any other way, i can goto Command prompt or do it hard way like, resetting the CMOS or something? ultra |

Did you reformat? For that to work your cd-rom drive has to be higher in the boot order than the hard-drive, to do this enter BIOS and go to standard cmos options or something similar. Write down the settings just in case then change it, save, exit and try again.

Boot the system with the XP cd, start setup, and when allowed, remove any and all partitions - and let XP set up a new partition.
