Microsoft just loves to waste screen space in their shells don't they. That's not even saying anything about the graphics overkill... I have to fight the impulse to rip XP down to barebones, I do not like what I'm seeing here.

For all the hype and waiting surrounding Longhorn, those screens didn't impress me very much. But we'll have to wait and see what new features there are, as those are more important than the eye candy (I think so anyways).

I don't skin my OS, and that's basically what it looks like MS is doing with longhorn. I haven't really seen any significant features that can't be done with a simple 3rd party piece of software.
Yes, the screenshots don't look too bad, but all that eye candy does is bump up the system requirements, and decrease the processing power a little that would normally be used for something else. As it stands, it's not looking too good. Unless MS does something fantastic with longorn, I'm not seeing where it's anything that special. |

I'm guessing you arn't a gamer Hi Ho, but I could be wrong. Point is, all the RAM space and CPU time used to load all those extra little OS graphics could be used for the program that you are actually running, and not all this background stuff. Most gamers don't skin their shell. Heck, most that I know have a gaming account and hardware profile that kills anything and everything that isn't absolutly needed for windows to run.

Back in the old Win95 days I used 640x480 on my 15" CRT and it was all I needed (yeah, I didn't do video editing at that time nor did I have digital photos). When I got my 15" TFT .. wow 1024x768. . that is space . . . ![]() Longhorn will sure have an option for the classic view. Right now it just looks like Windows XP with Luna's successor to me. RJ

Yeah, those screenshots look ok, but really just more like a professional skin for XP. I'm sure there will be differences other than how it looks though. At least there had better be.

Dont see what all hype is, just looks like any other windows with a different skin. I had a program that put a sidebar exactly like that and took it off after I saw all the recources it took. Skins dont really impact the system performance, I has classic and now I have a skin and my frame rate is still the same.

I run on 1280x1024 resolution so space on my screen is no problem and I like the most used programs to be in the start menu. I think the new start menu is great. and with my theme it looks lika a open book
