play non-finished avi files?

every time I download a video before waiting a long time fo it to download I always check the first couple of seconds to make sure it works and that its what i want. There have been a couple that got me a message from WMP that said "unknown error" but I just realised that they were all AVI files. Is it becaus avi files cant be played when they arnt finished of do I have bad luck today?
