Some bigger colleges offer discounts on software so good to check there first. If none available (as was my daughter's case), go with the Office XP Student/Teacher edition. Not only can you install it on a desktop, but I believe you can actually install it on two desktops and 1 laptop. Also, if you can't get a discounted deal on XP operating system, check out the XP Pro upgrade at Newegg. I bought one for my daughter's new desk top machine for $85. All you need is an older copy of a legit software to install it. I did mine on a clean hdd.

The Office 2003 Student and Teacher Edition is anywhere from $125 to $150 at a lot of retail stores - even Sam's Club has it. They do not require ID to buy it, and it's legally installable on 3 PC's *in the same household* - and it can be activated on 3 separate machines without calling. This is a basic version - Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook.
Compare that deal to what the school offers. |

i would check with the school. i just bought it at my university (bowling green state university) for $10.70, and it is the professional version. great deal, but they make you charge it to your bursar account so you only buy one copy. it is the same price for windows xp pro, and office:mac. the other two universities in my area have it at the same rate, if not cheaper
