ASUS Mobo and PC-Cillin

An AV program called PC-Cillin came bundled with my ASUS mobo (P4P800SE). I'm assuming this is an OME version of the program. Has anyone used this AV program, is it any good?

Yes, it's one of the better AV products you can use. Pretty unobtrusive and nicely effective. It has a firewall as well. Probably comes with a 6 month free subscription.

I'm with Kov-Ice on this one. Although I haven't used it, I have heard pretty good things about it. J think i got it with my p4p800 too, but i have a norton subscription.

you might as well use it for as long as its free, see how you like it, and then maybe you can change when your trial runs out.

There's probably an option to disable it (I'm almost positive) so there shouldn't be any conflicts. Search Google for reviews, so maybe you can find out which firewall is better.

The version that came with the mobo might not have the firewall..I could be wrong, I'm not at home to verify it..

This is what it says on the ASUS website....

Trend Micro PC-cillin anti-virus software (OEM version)

I'm just hesitant installing AV software, I've had bad experiences with Norton AV products about 6-8 years ago and have never used AV products since then.

Personally, I think that you're putting yourself at a much larger risk by not having anti-virus software. Technology has improved a lot in 6-8 years...

PC-Cillin antivirus is excellent, but the firewall is not so good. If it wants to install the firewall, don't. It's got issues and conflicts.

I've used PC-Cillin for some time before I got NOD32. I am thinking that it is one of the better AVs. I should tell you that its detection rate is pretty amazing, however, it is not very skilled in cleaning it. A good portion of the viri caught usually are quarentined. As for firewall, I'm thinking you can go ahead and get one like Kerio's Personal Firewall, which is known to be effective while costing not a cent to the user.

Overall, TrendMicro makes some nice products - definately ahead of McAfee, probably ahead of Norton. You should probably use it until the subscription runs out, on which you should go consider other options.

Hope that helps,
kram

.....the mobo came with PC-Cillin 2002 version.. I'll just get the newer version, PC-Cilllin Internet Security 2004, since it's received the best/top reviews for AV software...the 2002 version didn't do so well in reviews...
