making new partition
I just downloaded mandrake 9.2 and I want to make a dual boot. I installed the trial for partition magic but it doesnt let me create a new partition and im not gonna spend 70$ USD for a program im only gonna use once. Other than reformating what can I do? Are there any good freeware ptograms that can do this?

Go to Ranish.com and download their free Partition Manager. It also has a boot manager called XOSL.

You run that risk with any partition manager... I have had my data lost with partition magic.... so no even that is 100% sure.
You should always back up your data just to be on the safe side.

Alright, ill just put all I want to keep in a zip file and burn it on a CD first. I just want to know, is there anything I can do that would help prevent loss of data?

You said the trial doesn't let you creat a partition. Does it let you resize one? If it does just resize the old partition and let mandrake setup the partitions on the free space.

You could let mandrake try and resize it for you, but thats kind of iffy.

Mandrake will let you resize partitions during installation. But because your useing NTFS and an old version of mandrake it might not work. If you were useing mandrake 10,0 official release you should be able to resize the NTFS partition, But its still dangerous, it worked fine for one of my freinds but another one lost all of his data.

Ill try, but itint 9.2 still fairly new? I remember not long ago 9.1 was the lettest one and then 9.2 came out, long after NTFS became the standard for windows. I have almost to personal files on my PC, all i have is on a CD, the only problem is downloading, installing and seting up all my software again.

10.0 community(beta) has been out for a while, but the final one was just released a couple weeks ago. You might want to also try fedora C2, its also pretty easy to use.

The partitioner worked perfectly, I have linux but when I boot it shows me all its doing then I have a CLI interface, it asks me my user name and password, I put it in and then I have a prompt [username@local host] and I have no idea what to do next.

what version of linux did you use? It sounds like you didn't install a GUI during the installation, you should try and reinstall and select KDE as your GUI.

I selected KDE and gnome as desktops, I set gnome as default(since I already used KDE once and wanted to try the other one)

Try looking at this web page about a program developed for Linux called NTFS Resize.
http://mlf.linux.rulez.org/mlf/ezaz/....html#reliable I have never used it. |

Google for Partion Magic. You can find it for about $20-25 through many vendors.
