the icon for "Virual Memory" comes up.... i.e. Windows is now increasing the size of your virtual memory because it is low ????????????????

I have always wondered the same thing. It doesn't seem to affect what I'm doing. I have only seen it on my other computer when it had 128 MB of RAM.

Virtual Memory is basically when your computer uses your harddrive for memory when there isn't enough RAM left. How much memory do you have?

Well yeah but why does it have to say "Windos is increasing your virtual memory" when it doesn't seem to affect normal usage?

That will happen when you have a marginal amount of physical ram and you are trying to open too many applications. If the physical ram is all used up and the pagefile is full, Windows 2K/XP will increase the virtual memory to protect itself and give you that message.
What version of Windows do you have, how much ram do you have, and how is the virtual memory configured? In 2K/XP, go to control panel, system, advanced, performance options, virtual memory, change. What's the minimum/maximum set to? Last edited by glc; 05-24-2004 at 08:06 AM. |

That's too little for XP, both RAM and pagefile size. I would get at least 256 MB of memory for running XP, and 512 MB is better. Pagefile size depends on your actual usage, but if you have just 128 MB of memory, I would set my pagefile at least at 384 MB, and maybe more.
For reference, I am running XP Professional with 512 MB of memory and a 400 MB pagefile. |

If you are running XP with only 128mb ram, set the min and max BOTH to 512.
