Cannot open IE

Everytime I try to open my Internet Explorer I get an error message that reads...

"Internet Explorer encountered an error in Kernel32.dll- please restart computer if this problem persists."

After I restart the computer, it still say's the same thing. What do I do...? Help. I don't want to have to re-format my harddrive and restore it to the factory setting.

Don't know if this will work but you could try,

If youre using XP, go to control panel>add remove programs>add remove windows components

select IE6 from the list and remove it, reboot then go back to add/remove components and re-install it.

The procedure is pretty similar to uninstall/reinstall I believe but I hav'nt had much experience with ME (never really liked it myself), but it should just appear in the programs list (you won't have the button.

You can't uninstall IE from control panel, in XP or ME, all that uininstall does is remove the shortcuts to IE. You have to go to microsofts website and do a repair of IE. Here is a link to the IE6 SP1 download, should give you the option to repair, or you could just install this.

Sorry, I assumed it actually removed IE 6, as its under the tab add/remove windows components in XP. Obviously I didn't want to try it myself as IE is working OK for a change and I dont want to mess with it.

eh it's ok You didn't think M$ would make it easy to uninstall a part of their OS did ya Just didn't want him to go home and try that and be suprised. I am having trouble finding any way to repair IE in windows ME. I tried to download the SP1 and it gave me a msg about another install already requires a reboot....So I didn't try again. I think I've fixed IE before on a Win98se machine this way, so hopefully that'll work.

What about running SFC, would that be of any benefit because it scans for altered files and allows you to restore them from the installation CD's. Don't know if that would actually repair the error but you could use it to resore individual files as well

SFC is System File Checker (it was only of windows 98 and ME as far as i know).

Just click Start>Run> and type in "SFC",

SFC will scan for altered system files (your problem sounds like somethings corrupted). If it finds anything it will ask you wether you want to restore the file(s) from the installation CD, if you do put the CD in and it will repair the file(s)

Do you really need to use IE? Because there are other browsers out there that are very good and very stable like Opera and Mozilla.

IE causes a lot of problems.

Very true, if i'm not mistaken was IE6 the same from Win2000 onwards? Does'nt look like MS have any interest in updating it a bit does it.
