Gaming laptop for college

Hi everyone,

I am going away for college soon, and as such am being forced to ditch my desktop in lieu of a laptop due to size/shipping restraints. I really would apreciate some advice on buying a good gaming laptop. I know that gaming laptops generally trade battery life/weight for more power, and i'm quite fine with this (in an ideal world i would happily bring over my obese desktop, irregardless of conveniance...). My main concern is my budget, which is limited to approximately 2000$ (perhaps a few 100 more).

My primary concern is gaming and my limited budget, everything else being secondary.

As a side note, i do not live in the U.S, i live in Hong Kong, and am going to University in England, which makes purchasing a specialised gaming laptop such as an Alienware or Fragnetics quite difficult (unless you happen to convince me that there is an extreme performance differance...)

Thank you for any advice

(apologies for any spelling/grammatical errors, im in a bit of a hurry as i write this).

Try toshiba sattelite m50. I think it will fit your budget.

If you're going for a Toshiba check out their Qismo line w. PCI Express video etc. Use the product finder to narrow down your specs and prices.

Pricegrabber.com is a good place to look for low prices and start filtering out the type of laptops that you do not want.

I have had three Dell laptops over the years and have found them to be almost flawless. Dell also honors it warranties unlike a few reports from people who have mentioned that Toshiba sometimes does not.

Dell Inspiron 9300.... I'm using it for exactly the situation you described mate, works a treat. As always, wait for a good deal on the Dell website before purchasing to save money (or, in my case, to get a better rig )

I got the 9300 like Jaggannath (he in fact suggested it to me in my thread). I think it's a great machine, even if it's a bit big and heavy, but I don't think you can do much better.

Get an Acer Ferarri 4000. Its about $2200 (depending on where u buy it from), and comes with 1 gig of ram, an AMD Turion ML-37 processor, and and ATI Radeon Xpress X700. Also has a slot-load DVD burner. Fair price for a gaming rig. Gaming rigs are normally extremely expensive (around $2500+) I'm 17, and will be heading to college myself in less than a year. I've researched laptops for a few months now and this is the best I've seen for the price (By comparison, an HP Compaq R4000 costs more than this fully loaded, and it has NO portability). Plus, it is easily upgradable. Go to www.laptoplogic.com or www.notebookreviews.com for more options/reviews.

Yeah, the Acer Ferrari isn't too bad either, but I still think the Dell edges it for value and specs
