Laptop overheating

My sister's laptop has recently been heating up really badly. When we first got it a year ago.. it ran cooler and the fan expelling air out the side wasn't as hot as it is now. When she's at college, she keeps the plug in. could that be the problem? Right now, she's unplugged it in hopes of depleting the energy and then plugging it back in for it to recharge. The laptop model is: acer travelmate 290 series.

OH Ahem. What would be the best way for me to cool it down? I'm not sure how to buy a cooler because i heard that getting a the wrong airflow fans could mess it up.
