What budget? Ipods are popular - but I have/had no desire to go do mainstream. If you are looking for something to record and play TV programs and videos and music and store photos (all parts of what make up a media player) I would recomend the Lyra 2780 - incredible for its price and records from TV at superb quality for its size - with nice sized LCD and really good tv play back.

Depends on how much space your want. Like ryan said, Ipods are popular and are very good. Other choices would be the ZenMicro or Irivers.

A lot of the stuff by Archos is excellent. I like the AV500:
http://www.archos.com/products/av_500/ It's $650, though.

Creative also makes a good chunk of the portable media players out there.

The Archos is certainly nice - but a little bulky - might not fit into your pocket if you want to use it to listen to music on. but otherwise I would make that a choice at the top of my list if I was in the market for one.

OH, BTW, my friend got that RCA Lyra, and it didn't work too well. Granted, that was about three years ago and they've doubtless improved the firmware since then, but it was very limited in what it could play back and the UI was reeally buggy.

That is odd - I got mine about three years ago; and have had no issues what so ever except a few time where songs have skipped, but I realized that happened only when battery life was near nothing, and I shrugged it off. Keeping up with the firmware has most likely improved the UI and everything has run faster (a lot faster ) since I updated it again last night.
