help with laptop selection
Hey everybody. Im in the market for a decent laptop for around $2000. I would like an intel centrino 1.73ghz processor because its known for long battery life. Ill be mostly on the go but i would like to do some VERY light gaming, like red alert 2 at 640x480 or 800x600 at medium detail. Not sure if I should pick a lappy with 64mb dedicated video memory or 1218mb shared. Ive tried venturing out on my own but confused at whichj to buy. I went to futureshop and found some that I might like. here they are.
Gateway 8510GZ Intel Pentium M 740 1.73GHz Laptop HP Intel Centrino 750 1.86GHz Laptop (DV1440CA) I was wondering if 512mb of 400mhz memory would run windows xp would run efficiently or should i opt for 1024mb. any feedback greatly appreciated. Last edited by Nav; 11-22-2005 at 08:32 PM. |

xp would run, no problem. if i were you, i would'nt buy computers from futureshop, becasue most of them right after the warranty goes everything goes, i think there warranty is 1 year, also youll save alot of money if you go to a local computer shop

I would not buy an HP (and probably not a Gateway either), and I would not buy from FutureShop. They will just try to sell you an extended warranty, which is basically pure profit for them.
Check this link out: Dell Inspiron 9300 The laptop is big, but if you select the GeForce Go 6800, you will have an excellent laptop for gaming. I'd say to check out the Inspiron 6000D (the 6000 with X300 graphics), but it doesn't seem to be available on Dell Canada's site.

the main thing for this laptop is not predominantly gaming but on the go type stuff, like typing, watch a movie in the car/plane, stuff like that. Gaming is not a huge deal for me. Thats why i bought the 7800gtx for gaming
Thanks everybody, This is great keep the info comin!

If you want a solid, portable machine and you're willing to spend CA$2000, check out IBM/Lenovo -- in particular their T43 with the X300 graphics card. I can't give you a link because Lenovo's Canada site is sort of weird, but look for the X300 and not the GMA900 graphics card.

Yup, look at IBM or Dell for your laptop, although Sager and Toshiba are also options. Any other brands I'd avoid
For Dell, I'd have to say the 6000 sounds like it would fit your build |

My former principle bought the Acer Ferrari (don't remember which one exactly) and was very pleased with it. The thing kicks and it looks sweet too.
