New PDA

I'm maybe asking for a PDA for Christmas to use as a camera/MP3 player/whatever. Any recommendation? I'm not looking to spend over $250. Here is a palmOne I found:

Thanks!

Honestly, right now I would steer well clear of the Palm platform. Palm Source (software) have scrapped the Cobalt OS entirely and are focusing their attention (and very limited resources) on a linux OS, Palm-One (hardware) seem to be making the switch to windows mobile instead. Support for the current palm os is dying I'm afraid.

I found the Palm TX, but after your post, Mac Medic, I am beginning to boubt that. I like the TX's Wi-Fi capabilities, but if the support is not going to be there, I guess it is kind of a waste. So, what about this one?

What are some other good brands?

Personally I would go for a Dell AXIM over that .. for example check out the Axim X51 - Wifi+BT. It's got a faster processor, more ROM, has way more expansion slot possibilities and wifi; if you dont want Wifi you can drop down to a lower model X51 without WiFi. This is a real good selection page to see the kind of device you are looking for: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobi...s/default.mspx

I really like this Dell:
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/prod...=19&l=en&s=dhs

I have a few questions, though:

1) Can I buy it cheap some other place or is Dell.com the best place to buy?
2) It has 64MB RAM and 128MB ROM. The RAM is the memory and the ROM is the "hard drive", correct?
3) Are there any camera add on cards that would be compatible with this? Whee is a good place to buy one?

Thanks!

1) As far as I know. Dell itself is the only distributer and only sells via their website or by phone. Maybe second hand Axim's are available somewhere else.
2) Yes. Next to that you can also add a SD or SF memory card to increase your "harddrive" to a maximum of 2GB.
3) Don't have a clue. Maybe somebody else knows more about these kind of accesoires.

I've looked at the Axim before for my own use, but I figured I wasn't going to use it as much to balance the investment. Still it would be my first choice if I had to buy one.

3. There are CF cameras that you can buy to add on; but they usually arent worth it both in terms of quality or cost (think they range in the $80 zone)

I am thinking of getting a few extra card for music, etc.

How great are the cameras on PDA's anyway? I might get one just for quick snapshots. I found the Veo Photo Traveler (http://www.veo.com/Traveler_PocketPc/default.asp#pda), which on Froogle, I think, is about $30. Not the best, but might be fun.

Another vote for the Axim's from Dell. I purchased an 624mhz X30 with bluetooth/802.11b and Kingston 512mb SD card for around $230 after rebates this past summer. Really love the device so far and the wireless comes in really handy at times to check email, or to send a quick IM to someone. HTH

Will these go on sale for Christmas? I want to ask for one, but they're expensive right now.

There is a good chance they will. The Axim X51v just recently went on sale for $200 something. Keep checking sites like www.slickdeals.net or www.ableshopper.com on a daily basis and you'll probably get in on one of those special deals (that's how I got mine). HTH

Ok I will keep watching those sites. I want to get it at the lowest possible price, because right now, it's really too expensive for my parents to cosider as a gift.
