Question acer laptops?

I have heard so many different things about acer laptops from salespeople. has anyone had any experience with them either good or bad. i need to ask how does anyone decide on which product to buy as some say dell is good, hp is not. there is just too many conflicting things on which to decide. ultimately i know it up to what one prefers but if anyone has any info i would appreciate it. thanks

Good laptop brands: Dell, Sager, Acer, IBM (although wait out on this, Lenovo just bought them), Toshiba
Bad laptop brands: Compaq, HP

If anyone cares to add to this feel free

Service has gone down slightly under Lenovo management, but the products have stayed high-quality, and considering the fact that many of the product-design team were transferred over to Lenovo, I forsee continuing good quality. Also, if Lenovo's quality were to go down, they would have shot themselves in the foot, because the main selling point of ThinkPads, and the reason they can demand premium pricing, is their quality.

I would also add Averatec to the "bad" list. Acer is IMO a second-tier manufacturer in terms of quality (Dell, IBM and Toshiba being in the first tier and HP, Compaq and Averatec being in the third tier).

there is absolutely no harm in getting an athlon 64bit. Actually, its harder to find one without 64bit compatibility. If you want to get a 64bit OS, u need a 64bit processor, but itl still be compatible with 32bit os's and programs. Just get it, and there is practically no price difference for athlons, so dont worry.

The problem is battery life. Pentium-Ms get by far the best battery life of any processor out, and they're 32-bit only.

They're not necessarily rip-offs, you seem fixated with this idea. Also, they have very few problems, and therefore it's not really a rip-off, you just pay for the quality

I just got in a new Acer Travelmate 4602NWLMi (Centrino 1.73, 512 DDR2 [533], ATI X700 [64MB], 60GB HDD, Dual detachable DVD Writer, 1280x800 widescreen, WiFi b/g, Bluetooth, LAN, modem, card-reader, IEEE 1394; in short the works).

I must say that I can see nothing wrong with the laptop in my first few days of regular use. It is very comfortable to type on and to use in general.

Build seems to be pretty sturdy, but in my opinion, the screen could be a little better saturated.

Compared to a lot of other higher priced options, this one seems to be pretty good for the course.

But the icon laptop is still the IBM: unbeatable quality but you pay a premium (which I for one do not mind).

I've heard that Alienware is a support nightmare, at least as their laptops go.

Your observation seems to mirror their reseller ratings: http://www.resellerratings.com/seller1650.html .. a ton of support call issues. Personally, I wouldn't trust a company that creates a hassle about the money to deal with after sales/tech support.

Too bad really. I like the looks of Alienware's line and they do pack a good punch.

This is somewhat of a different topic but if anyone has any input i'd appreciate it. I just built a computer (with a lot of help from this website) and i am planning on selling my inspiron 8600 and purchasing something smaller and more portable. i was looking at a dell 500m but i dont really know anything about other laptop brands. what would be a good laptop for around 500-600. all i am planning on using this for is wi-fi/internet, word processing, and thats about it...no games or any high powered apps...the most demanding would be access probally. anyways, thanks guys

matt, please start your own thread if it's a different topic - hijacking someone else's won't get you the responses you want and it's not fair to the person who started this thread.
