Knackered Keyboard?
This morning my wife spilt coffee on our laptops keyboard. The Enter, Backspace & page down button stopped working.
I removed the keys, cleaned them up etc and replaced them. When I booted the computer back up, other keys were playing up as well (e.g pressin the 1 key brought up "12345" on the screen and pressing the r key brought up rq) I have left the keyboard to dry out for now, but will it start functioning correctly or is it FUBAR'd? Thanks John |

Not sure on laptop keyboards but I've known folks to disassemble a keyboard and clean the plastic parts in the dishwasher! If you can remove yours from the laptop and disassemble it far enough to clean off the coffee residue, you may get lucky. Sounds like the liquid has created a circuit across tracks on the membrane. I'd sure try to save it before I bought a new one. Good luck.

What I want to know is why are keys that were unaffected by the spilage now malfunctioning?
The spillage happened at the right of the keyboard, harming the Enter, backspace and Page up & down keys, yet the number 1, 2, 3 and 4 keys, along with the Q, W E, R keys etc at the other end of the board are not working. I've tried to clear up as much as I can I think i'll just wait and see what happens. I really cannot afford a replacement though and it's neccessary for my work.

Worst case scenario, you can probably obtain a replacement keyboard from ebay or something, or directly from the computer company. ALSO... if that's too expensive an option, or you can't wait that long, you can always attach a small USB keyboard. You may want to refer to the customer service site for your computer and download a disassembly guide so you can remove the keyboard for cleaning/replacement.

What brand and model of laptop is it? I had to replace a keyboard on a Dell Inspiron 1100; I called up Dell and a replacement only cost $15.
