Pocket PC and WiFi

Thinking about buying a Dell Axim W/WiFi...Question is what can I expect as I surf the internet....can I download files? How do the pages load/Look? could I visit this site...etc. Any info would be appreciated.

Merry Christmas
Randy

Pages don't format themselves especially for PDA scrrens most of the time. The largest PDA screen you can get is 640x480; most pages are formatted for 1024x768. Browsing will be possible but not quite pleasant.

Yes, you can download files. Not executable ones though, well at least not the ones that you would normally download on your desktop or laptop. Example: you can download the quicktime program, but you can run it on a PocketPC OS. You can save it for later when you transfer to your desktop. You are able to download things like pics, music and documents with no problems.

I disagree. I use my IPAQ hx4700 (480x640 VGA screen) to surf the web all the time. I use the SE_VGA utility to give me true VGA and I flip into landscape mode. Browsing is quite good, with most pages fitting into the screen area. Text is a bit small, but still readable.

I use wifi on my Dell Axim X3i all the time. As mentioned above most sites are not formatted for viewing on PDA screens, but I'm used to scrolling accross and down pages now. Some sites now even have mobile versions to use. I wouldn't be able to get through the day without this little machine!

Pocket IE has a bit of a hard time formatting pages for a small screen. I use the Netfront browser instead that has a smart fit feature that re-formats the page surprisingly well. It also has an autocruise feature that will download the pages from a set list you create for offline viewing, sort of like the activesync favorites feature but without the PC being involved.

Great link, Mac Medic! I'll have to try it when I get home. I don't use my PocketPC much anymore though. Got a Sidekick2 for all that.
