Best and worst manufacturers

PCWorld just came out with their annual reliability, service and support reader survey:

http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/artic...09,pg,1,00.asp

The page on laptops is here:

http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/artic...09,pg,9,00.asp

Winners and losers for both desktops and laptops (as well as other devices) are listed here:

As you can see, if you want utmost reliability, you can't go wrong with Apple or Lenovo/IBM -- They are both above average in reliability and reliability satisfaction. Dell is in there in the "average" category, but I will continue to recommend them because of their good value. Surprisingly, HP's quality has improved (although I will continue to not recommend them because of past experience with their products), but their corporate sibling Compaq is predictably in last place. Acer's quality seems to have improved with their new influx of products, so I can safely recommend them.

PC Magazine comes out with a similar survey; I will try to be on the lookout for that.

I think many people were wondering what would happen to service once IBM sold their laptop line to Lenovo; it looks like it hasn't suffered. That's good to hear.

I thought Dell would do better. I too recommend Dell desktops when people ask; what else am I going to recommend?

I've been an Acer fan for quite a while now. They're very underrated here in the United States. People here don't know that they're one of the most popular throughout Asia and Europe. Acer is #1 in Canada now too. Most people here a spoon fed with Dells and other budget mainstreams sold at Best Buy or some other local places.
