Compaq Presario 1800 USB 2.0 Upgrade
A guy at work has a compaq presario 1800. He bought a pcmcia card to upgrade to usb 2.0. Well the card will not work. We have tried reinstalling the drivers several times but it will not work. He has a wireless card that he uses in the same slot so we know the slot is ok. Could this laptop be so old that it can not be upgraded to usb 2.0? Thanks.....

What is the name of the card? Some cheaper cards "re-use" the USB hub on the laptop, making the laptop's ports inoperable, and it may not be working properly with your friend's laptop.

Check Device Manager to see if the card is recognized. I assume you're running XP?

For some systems (including Desktops), if you want to install a different type of USB, via pcmia or PCI slot, some motherboards require you to go into bios and disable the on board USB's in order for the added hardware to work. You can try that.

I have a Compaq 1700 and for a while I used a 4 port orange micro USB 2.0 card. Depending on the device and the USB card, he may or may not need an AC adapter plugged into it.
Iogear also makes, or made a decent 2 port USB 2.0 card. That's the only thing I can think of. Either he installed it wrong, or it requires more power than the notebook can afford. Usually these cards will come with an AC adapter or they'll mention an *optional* adapter for additional purchase.

Yep the comp is running XP and the card is recognized. I'll check out the bios and see if I can disable the usb there.
