A laptop won't power up! Help.plz!

Here's the problem... My uncle has a Dell laptop (a fairly old one) and recently it stopped working. It doesn't turn on at all. However, when I plugged in the power cord, the power and HD lights turn on and work for about 10-15 secs. and then shut off completely. I took a look at it, but couldn't really find a problem. I told him to try a new power cord (since was a bit damaged) - he did- and nothing happened. Does anyone know what the problem may be? I would guess there's a problem w/ the motherboard, but I'm not sure at all.

try taking the battery out of the laptop, then power it up using the electrical plug.

How old is it? If it's like 8 years old, it's probably not worth it.

this laptop is about 4-5 yrs old. (my guess). it's not very valuable , but there are some important files that i need to pull off the HD. Of course, i can take the HD out and connect it to another laptop, but it's too much hassle. arix...i think u may be right - i'll definately have to open it up and see if that's the problem. thanks a lot.
