Toshiba Satellite power/battery question

Can I run my Toshiba Satellite laptop on AC power with no battery installed?

Great thanks! It will be being used many hours a day, every day soon and I've read that running it with the battery installed (on AC power) for long periods will not do the battery good. Is this true?

I've heard that once the battery is fully charged internal ciruitry prevents overcharging. But my daughter has a PIII Toshiba and she kept hers plugged in all the time the first year in college. Her battery was dead by year end. So I don't know what to believe.
