LAPTOP issue... to slow...

Dell Latitude D500
Intel Pentium Processor 1300MHz
653,528 KB Ram
Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 4
Broadband DSL
Norton Antivirus 2004 Professional

It is amazingly slow and keeps getting slower as the days pass... It never was blazing fast but it was never this slow either, just keeps slowing down as the months pass... (Imagine a 56k modem speed for the whole computer, not just the internet...)

This is a pure work computer and only simplex software is being used on it... Quickbooks is loaded but NEVER used but boss wants to keep it there, "just in case"... 20 gig hard drive and only 8 gigs is used up...

The only thing that comes to my mind to speed this thing up is by upgrading it's hardware... What should be the next step to make this laptop faster?? I'm trying for the easiest way so I don't harm it... Laptop isn't quite my area of knowledge...

If anymore info is needed, just ask...

thanks

Look at the software aspect. Norton AV is a known huge resource hog, AVG is a lot easier on the system. Review all startup items and background processes. Use something like Ewido to check for malware. Install something like Crap Cleaner and do a full cleanup. Run a chkdsk /f and do a few defrags. If you have Diskeeper Pro, set a fixed size pagefile around 2 gigs then do a boot time defrag to defrag the pagefile and MFT.

There really isn't any way to upgrade the hardware other than throw more ram at it. Ram for that thing is not particularly cheap. Sounds like you presently have a 128mb and a 512mb module in it. Pulling the 128 and dropping another 512 in will cost you 75 bucks, that's not a bad way to go, Win2K runs very nice with a gig. 1 gig modules are very pricey though.

Well if I drop another 512 in it then it will have a total of a gig... Don't think he wants to go that far for the gig stick...

Now about AVG... I have it running on ALL of my personal computers for two reasons... One: I hate Norton every since they combined with symantec... and Two: because AVG is free...

Is AVG worthy enough to protect a business computer?? This is the wireless laptop and even though I have encryptions enabled with 64bits 10 hexadecimal with my range booster and 128bit 26 hexadecimal on my router, will AVG be able to protect it well enough like Norton does (or claims it does)??

Is MSconfig available to put on Win 2K?? Enable and disable startup programs would help alot... I already defragged hoping it would help some... I have the chkdsk /f running next time I start up (which will be in a few seconds)...

Is Ewido the same basics as Spybot - Search & Destroy??

A gig total should be plenty unless you do a lot of heavy multitasking or use very memory intensive applications.

AVG is very worthy, and if you want to keep it totally legal, you can buy the Professional version. I actually feel that AVG offers *better* protection than Norton these days.

You can copy msconfig.exe from an XP computer and put it on a 2K computer and use it.

Ewido is more than just a spyware scanner - it also hunts down Trojans and other malware. It's an excellent tool, and they offer an online scan similar to Trend Micro's Housecall. Buy the full version and it is an excellent background protector with a lot smaller footprint than Microsoft's Antispyware.

What benefits does Ewido give you compared to Spybot?? Spybot is free and already on the network, that's the only reason why I ask...

AVG Free Edition Antivirus is legal already... From what I read, the professional edition helps with instant messaging programs and scanning emails compared to the Free Edition... Neither of those two items I do on this computer... I do see however it provides AVG Resident Shield which helps prevent corruption in files and scans files that I open...

Question is now, Free Edition?? or make the jump to the Professional Edition for $40?? Seeing how it's not my money, I need a professional opinion that I can show my boss...

Grisoft Professional Edition

Ewido is free as a scanner. You only have to pay to use background protection and autoupdating after 14 days. Try the free online scanner first. I'm approaching this as a cleanup project, not necessarily continuing protection, that should be addressed separately. Of course, you should also run Spybot and Ad-Aware too as part of this cleanup operation.

Technically, AVG Free is not legal to use for business, only for personal use. I stress "technically". Resident Shield works in Free - the only real functional difference between Free and Pro is more customizable scans and scheduling and better update servers. Due to forum rules I will leave it at that and let you make your own decision. I wouldn't be surprised if Spybot and Ad-Aware have the same technical licensing clauses, I do know Lavasoft has a pay-for version of Ad-Aware.

If your company has a network with a server, I'd recommend you let your Symantec subscription run out (if that's what you are currently using), then buy a full Grisoft package to replace it with. By the time you finish with the server and workstation licensing, it's about 1/2 the cost of Symantec, McAfee, and Trend Micro, and it's a 2 year subscription, not just 1 year. The only thing you don't get with Grisoft that you do with the others is phone support, you have to rely on e-mail.

About msconfig for my Laptop...

I use msconfig on my personal computers and I pretty much know what I can disable and what I have to keep enabled...

However, this is my business laptop with Win2K and I just brought msconfig.exe from one of my XP computers... There are some stuff on here that I've never seen before... Would someone be able to tell me what I need to keep enabled and what I can disable??

All these are from the "StartUP" msconfig menu... I have Norton Antivirus and D-Link USB Wireless connector... Those are the only two things I noticed that I need... What about the other stuff??

This company is a small business with a network that I have set-up without a server, just sharing from computer to computer with the main computer kind of like a central for everything... 5 computers max including laptop...

I wish I had this much control over my other network set-up for the other company... lol, thanks though...

Before you disable ANYTHING you need to do malware scans! You are infected with something. If Ewido or any other utility can't get rid of something, repeat in safe mode. We will deal with startups later when it's clean - after running several things we will use a HijackThis log to confirm that things are kosher. To prepare for this, review the sticky thread in our Security forum.

Are you connecting this thing directly to the Internet or are you behind a router? If the former, you don't have a firewall and are asking for problems.

ok, nothing is disabled yet... I ran all the programs in this order... Defrag, Chkdsk, Spybot, Ewido Malware, and then Ad-Aware... The start-up menu in msconfig looks exactly the same... So, next step?? Boot computer in safe mode and run which programs??

*Update... I put the computer in safe mode and ran spybot and Ad-Aware and got rid of a few items with Ad-Aware but the start-up tab is the exact same as before... I couldn't run Ewido because I didn't have internet connection in safe-mode... I'm going to download it and update this thread next...

Oh and the laptop in question is connected to a wireless bellsouth router/modem with a wireless USB D-Link card... I have a 64bit hex key encryption on my range booster (Also D-Link) and I have a 128bit hex key encryptoin on my router/modem...

All encryptions were done by me so whatever info is needed, it's easy and fast to get to... And wouldn't Window's have it's own firewall??

No, only XP has a firewall. 2000 is wide open. I use Zone Alarm 4.5 on mine. The router is a fair firewall in itself.

Go ahead and post a HijackThis log in here now - and we can tell you what to get rid of.

Check the boxes for the following and remove them:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wqdfadads] sdqdad.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Diomacd] C:\winnt\system32\fdafbfd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [wqdfadads] sdqdad.exe

Then uninstall Norton, reboot, and see how it runs. Run HJT again, if any of those 3 items or anything SIMILAR (seemingly random file names) come back, post the log again.

Neither - delete them with HijackThis. Check the boxes next to those 3 entries and hit the Fix Checked button.

Also, if need be... Which stick of RAM should I buy?? It has a stick of 128MB and 512MB in it right now... Newegg provides 3 of them... One 512 and two 1gigs (one refurbished and one new)... I'm thinking that maybe I should jump up to the gig but is it overkill?? Also, is the refurbished worth buying if the gig is the way to go??

Crucial.com: http://www.crucial.com/store/listpar...D500&submit=Go

Pull the 128 and stick a 512 in, from Crucial. The 1 gig is too damn expensive, and unnecessary.

Log is clean, looks like any other normally running Dell.

The boss is extremly impressed with the speed (Norton was a MAJOR factor)... He was actually saying to go with the 1 gig but then again, he only knows how to start the computer and get on the web... He knows NOTHING about computers...

The price didn't phase him at all but the more I think about it, the more I think the gig is overkill... He was plenty happy with the speed it now has but it is still just a bit slower than I like it... He doesn't overload the computer with programs when he uses it, mainly software programs while connecting to the stuff he works on...

Well, if he wants to go with the whole gig he IS the boss, but buy it direct from Crucial to *guarantee* compatibility. Yes, I know you can get 1 gig sodimms cheaper, but do you want the same hassle you are having with that HP desktop you are dealing with in another thread?

Don't forget to install an antivirus.

HP's and Compaq's I expect those kinds of problems... If I were to go with the 512, would you still recommend going to Crucial.com and ordering it... I don't believe that even you would pay that much more for a stick of RAM from crucial when you can find it from newegg or any other site for about 40% cheaper...

I won't sell generic ram to any of my customers for name brand notebooks or desktops.

So your saying the crucial RAM sticks on newegg.com aren't crucial?? Doesn't quite make sense to me... After all, even you have suggested that I buy a gig for my personal computer from newegg.com... Though yes, it's not a name brand computer, it is still a computer just the same...

http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=150997

Will they not honor a crucial stick from newegg.com with their lifetime warranty??
