Laptop touch pad not responding

Having some issues with my Acer Aspire 1690. Used it in class today. Touchpad working fine. Get it home...stops working...I can use a USB mouse, but the touchpad is completey unresponsive (buttons and all), the touchpad software claims everything is enabled and OK. I dont see any signs of physical damage, and i dont hear any clanking or such inside. Any troubleshooting tips before I would have to call Acer? I checked the BIOS, but could not find any relevant info on the touch pad (I was looking for things in terms of PS/2 Ports, but if the touchpad software says its fine, i'd highly doubt it were disabled somehow).

TIA

Sounds like a hardware issue... if the drivers and everything are installed and were working fine...
Just make sure nothing has exclamation points or x's in the Device manager... Then make the call to Acer...

Good luck...

Well its likely a hardware issue then. all the software tells me that its running fine. But now is a bad time to call Acer as our college just got out of its 3 week strike, and losing my primary programming tool for awhile is a very bad idea...when my term is over...i'll give'em a call (providing the problem doesnt mysteriously fix itself )

As long as it will be under warranty, no harm no foul ;-)

Before you think about a warranty, try this out:

Most Acer laptops have a keyboard option whereby you can disable the touchpad to prevent accidental presses and movement when you are typing.

Try this out by pressing Fn+F7. It should display Touchpad Disabled/Enabled in large green letters on the screen.

I have an Acer 4602, and on that machine, when I have disabled the touchpad as above, the Touchpad manager software still shows the pad as being enabled.

Try it and let us know.

Oh my goodness. you were completely right! I forgotten completely about that 2nd function and I mustve hit it by accident...o well at least my faith in my laptop is no longer shaken!

TIA
