Just got my new laptop
The only thing is, it didnt come with an OS CD, it had WinXP Pro SP2 preloaded, but I dont have the CD. Should'nt I have this for any future trouble I may have with my OS?
This is my laptop http://www.euclidcomputers.com/frame...9U+yes+0+New+0

Many do not come with an OS CD or even a recovery CD anymore. I know with my Sony VAIO, I could have purchased the recovery CD extra, but what we did was purchase the extended warranty, which included disaster recovery.

Look around the preloaded software. You might have software to burn a single copy of a recovery CD. Some go that route. Others have a hidden partition on the hard drive that has all the recovery info. If that ends up being the case, you might want to ghost that part of the drive, and stick it somewhere if you can.
I know, talk about a pain in the rear just to save a few cents.

Thats how my Sony works, it has that hidden partition, which I just used to load the laptop to full factory install version because I am selling it, but of course this does you no good if the whole harddrive takes a dump.

Yup, the Recovery stuff sure isn't the same as having the XP disk. Friend of mine just got a new Dell Duo core and the first thing he did was wipe the hdd and install his own XP Media Center. That did three things for him. One it wiped out the Dell junk. Two it recovered the 10Gb of hdd space Dell had allocated to the Recovery. And three, he can do a repair install or use the Recovery Console if/when he needs to. (Not sure what this did for his warranty tho!)

I also did a wipe and reinstall with my Dell laptop, since I already had an XP Home disc i could use. Although that was from a different build, I used the Licence key that came with the laptop.
I did keep the restore partition in place though, figured it might come in useful at some point, and was only a couple of GBs. FK |

The IBM/Lenovo preload actually is actually quite good. The only things I took out were Norton, IBM Rescue and Recovery, and IBM Access Connections.
