Fan goes on and stays on

Hello-

I have a problem and I think I know what I did...I was attempting to add RAM to my Dell laptop Inspirion 1100 P4, now 640 RAM, 40g hard drive, windows xp and was successful.

However, before I knew the difference between 2100 and 3200 DDR, I changed something when I went into Start>Run>????

I don't remember which command I went into, but I changed it from 2100 to 3200 thinking that was something I had to do. I would like to change it back. Perhaps this is making my fan go on too soon and stay on...

Hopes this makes sense and sorry ahead of time if this was posted before or doesn't make sense. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Wow! Just enough info to confuse me. First off there's is no need to change any settings when installing memory. PC3200 will automatically run at he slower speed if it's mixed with PC2100 or if the max bus speed of the cpu is 400. If your cpu fan is running all the time, chances are something is running and loading the cpu. Use Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up the Task Manager and see if your cpu is showing a high load. Then check to see what is running that is causing the excess load.

Thanks Panama Red

"Use Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up the Task Manager and see if your cpu is showing a high load. Then check to see what is running that is causing the excess load."

-Okay, I notice when I use iTunes or Windows Media Player the fan goes on immediately.

So you are saying that something else is running to cause the fan to go on? If yes, how do I check or eliminate that?

Thanks in advance.

The fan *needs* to run to keep the CPU cool.
