Digital cameras??
Can anyone recomend any good digital cameras to me?
I know very little about them. I dont want a top-of-the-range camera tht has every thing including th kitchen sink n even cooks ur tea for u (very poor attempt at humor) All i want is a bog-standard digital camera, prefferably one tht will fit in a pocket. my limit is about £100 i dont really want to spend more than that (and the less i spend the better) anything u say has to help cos like i said, i know next to nothing about them. Iv seen these two, any thoughts? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal..._BenQ_493.html http://ebuyer.co.uk/customer/product...uct_uid=108574 Thnaks

Any 5 megapixel camera in that price range is going to have some serious shortcomings elsewhere. You would be better off getting a lower resolution camera made by one of the major camera manufacturers.

pay no attention to digital zoom, it's useless.
only zoom that counts is optical.

What are you expecting to use this for?
Any camera will take simple pictures to be used soley as quick snaps, but as soon as you start talking about taking pictures of fast moving items (formula one for example) or things far away (vacation snaps of the gorgoeus views)-, or wanting to print the pictures at anything larger than a standard small print - you need more pixels and more bells. Here are some quick google hits on buying digital cameras to help you along. http://www.pcworld.com/howto/bguide/...,page,1,00.asp http://reviews.cnet.com/Digital_came...tag=cnetfd.dir http://reviews.cnet.com/Digital_came...7.html?tag=dir

You also have to worry about low-light and high-contrast situations -- many digicams are downright abysmal in those conditions.

Okie Doke, after a little research in verious places Ive found these two:
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/90466/rb/19281352373 http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/76876/rb/19281638316 what are peoples views or experience on these? or the manufacturers? From the reviews the Pentax seems quite good although it is lacking a bit on the information about it. The Kodak has more information and seems good but no reviews so any help will be good!

Here are some reviews from CNET and Amazon (US) for each.
Pentax Optio S50 http://reviews.cnet.com/Pentax_Optio...-30998944.html http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...g=UTF8&s=photo and the Kodak EasyShare Z730 http://reviews.cnet.com/Kodak_EasySh...-31289185.html http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...Fencoding=UTF8 Seems the Kodak is the better of the two from the average review and from the fact that the optical zoom is a little better. Some people made specific comments that the Pentax is slow, sucks batteries dry fast, and not as good in low light. I do not have experience with either brand or cammera - all my cameras are film- Pentax - my wife has a digital -a Sony Cybershot - I think the link below is it but this camera is over a year old now so it may no longer be available new - she likes it, I just bought her two more 512 memeory chips over the weekend. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...Fencoding=UTF8 Call me old school but my favorite camera is still the Pentax K1000 - full manual - made for 21 years starting in 1976 - I have three of them now - two of the newer K lens mount and one screw lens mount. |

Kodak digital cameras are decent quality and very easy for a beginner to use. Professionals don't care for them because the features that make them easy to use hinder any advanced techniques. I'd recommend any Kodak to a casual user for a first digital. Be aware that the Easy Share software they come with installs itself in the startup and is a big pig. You can reconfigure it to not start all by itself and manually run it when needed.
