Fried Laptop

Last week, my AC plug fo my Inspiron e1000 broke but the plug for my parents HP Omnibook 6100 worked on it. Same specs. So my dad called a friend and got me one of these plugs. PC booted on it Friday. I came back from the weekend today and it doesn't boot with any previosly working adapter. Any tips? The battery must be empty, it's a nickel cadium.

As propitiatory as Dell is I'd get one of their adapters instead of trying to make something else work. Do you know anyone with a similar computer that you can see if they can charge your battery ? Might save buying a part for a DOA computer.

What's DOA. Also, I'm pretty sure it's fried, would a new adapter do any good. Also, if the compueter was off and an adapter that was too powerful was plugged in, could this fry the mobo? On Dell's site, they do not list a compatible AC adapter for sale either.

Define "broke." Did the plug on the adaptor side break, or the one on the laptop side? How did it break (i.e. the whole thing disconnected, or a piece fell out)?
