I have finally retired my thinkpad 1441 however, I was wondering if I can upgrade the processor or anything else?
Thanks. |

Although the processor is rather slow on that system, it would be a smoking machine with a RAM upgrade and Windows 2000. According to Crucial, that machine can take two 128 MB SODIMMs -- they're $47.37 each from their site, so it seems like it's worth it to me to get at least one: http://www.crucial.com/store/MPartsp...&WSPN=CT189651 I bet Windows 2000 will run pretty well with 192 MB. You can buy 2000 off eBay for around $60. If you do that, you can also get a wired or wireless PCMCIA NIC -- the wireless won't be very fast because of the slow processor, but you'll be able to use it.

I have done the RAM upgrade so, if I am reading yoiur post correctly by putting W2K on the machine it should improve performance (slightly)?

No, it won't improve performance over Win9x, but it sure will be a lot more stable. I have a customer with a few old Thinkpad 390X's (P2-400) with 256 ram and Win2K - they run fine. The one he has with only 128 ram is pretty doggy though. You have a Celeron 466 so performance should be similar. There really is no way to improve perceived performance in it if the ram is already maxed out. Older slower laptops such as that are still very useful but you can't expect them to perform like new machines. My *everyday* laptop is a T20 with a P3-700, 256 ram, and Win2K, and it does everything I need just fine. It's a major improvement over my previous laptop that had a 233 MMX and 128 ram - which I was running Win2K on also.
